ACTIVITIES OF THE OTTAWA BRANCH OF THE POLISH INSTITUTE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES IN CANADA Last year, the Ottawa Branch of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in Canada (PINK) actively cooperated with the main Polish-Canadian organizations in Ottawa, such as the Polish Combatants Association in Canada (SPK), Branch No. 8 in Ottawa, and with the Canadian Polish Congress (KPK) - National Capital Branch. The Ottawa Branch of PINK, a member organization of the Canadian Polish Congress (KPK), currently has 52 members. One of our members, Dr. Tomasz Skapski, Professor of Economy at the Université du Québec à Hull and former member of the Executive Committee, passed away last year. As in previous years, the Ottawa Branch of PINK organized lectures and sponsored various cultural activities. Five Executive Committee meetings took place during the year. The President and the Delegate to KPK participated in most meetings of the Canadian Polish Congress, National Capital Branch. There were 4 lectures, 2 video presentations, and 1 soirée of poetry and music organized in 2002 - 2003. The lectures were held at Saint Paul University, and the video presentations in Polish Hall, SPK. The detailed list of events for the academic year 2002-2003: September 28, 2002 - Indeed I Love - A soirée of sensual poetry and music - an artistic event performed in English by: Magdalena Goledzinowska, Agnieszka Kielczewska and Maciej Karpinski - reading of poems by Z. Herbert, Cz. Milosz, M. Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska, H. Poswiatowska, and W. Szymborska - and Caroline Freeze -performing piano compositions by Chopin, Gershwin, Ravel, Schumann and others. Produced and directed by Eva Karpinski. The Unitarian Church in Ottawa. December 12, 2002 - Father Janusz Kowalik, Ph.D., OMI, Seminary of the Oblate Fathers in Obra - Impact of the Church on culture in Poland - Saint Paul University. January 28, 2003 - Prof. Jerzy Wojciechowski, Ph.D., University of Ottawa - Polish culture seen from the outside: The splendours and miseries - Saint Paul University. February 4, 2003 - The foredoomed - National Armed Forces - video presentation and a panel discussion with the participation of Waclaw Borowiecki, Jacek Lelita, A. Maciej Jablonski and Jerzy Wojciechowski. Joint PINK-SPK event in Polish Hall in Ottawa. March 18, 2003 - Prof. Pawel Dobrowolski, Ph.D., Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Canada - Membership of Poland in the European Union: Opportunities and challenges in the XXI century - Saint Paul University. Organized jointly with the Embassy of Poland in Canada and the National Capital Branch of KPK in Ottawa. March 25, 2003 - Prof. Grzegorz Kersten, Ph.D., University of Ottawa - Internet, negotiations, culture: Users and software - Saint Paul University. April 24, 2004 - Polish Underground State 1939-1945 - video presentation organized jointly with SPK - Polish Hall in Ottawa. The Ottawa Branch of PINK continues its co-operation with other Canadian Polish organizations and local universities, as well as the Embassy of the Republic of Poland. Prof. Jerzy Sasiadek and Dr. Maciej Jablonski participated in most meetings of the Canadian Polish Congress, National Capital Branch. Dr. Maciej Jablonski and Prof. Pawel Wyczynski also participated in the meetings of the Executive Body in Montreal. The Ottawa Branch of PINK, together with the whole Institute, is planning celebrations to mark the 60th Anniversary of PINK that will take place in Montreal in Fall 2003.
